·        Avoid using weed & feeds containing Atrazine:  This goes more towards trees, but
during a drought there is a greater risk of trees pulling up greater amounts of Atrazine as they
search for water, causing stress and possible death.

·
Use soil penetrents such as Water-In or Aqua-Duct:  These products are designed
to break the surface tension of the hard, dry soil and help keep water from pooling up.  Using
these products before you water your lawn will help pull water deeper into the soil towards the
grass roots.  Be sure to follow all label instructions.

·
Keep an eye out for chinch bugs:  With the high temperatures and the lack of rain
chinch bugs are certainly going to be a big problem this year.  Chinch bugs normally appear in
the front yard near driveways and sidewalks.  If you see an area of dead grass that is
noticeably spreading within a few days, treat the entire front yard with a lawn insecticide
(bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, etc.) labeled for chinch bugs.  A liquid application is the
best for killing the bugs, but many find the granules easier to use. Be sure to follow all label
instructions.

·
Nutrient loss:  Rain water is always best, but since almost all of the watering done
these last few months has been by hand watering and sprinklers, ph levels might have been
changed and nutrients lost.  Applying an Iron & Soil Acidifier can help adjust the ph and
replace nutrients.

·
Prevention for the future:  The best way to help keep your hard healthy during a
drought is to put down organic material.  This wont happen quickly, but starting on a good
program of putting down compost at least a couple of times a year will help keep the grass
healthier and keep the soil from drying out as quickly.
